Like many young professionals, Shauna thought she had a pretty clear vision of her post-college career path. With a communications degree in hand, she accepted a position in the marketing department of a local business. It didn’t take long for her to realize working with people one-on-one was something she preferred over marketing. Flagship recognized her passion and flair when it came to building employee teams. Shauna joined our Human Resources department, where she continues to thrive.
In her own words:
I graduated from college with a communications degree and expected to build a career path in…marketing. I realized relatively quickly that marketing wasn’t the right fit, at all! I knew I wanted to work directly with people. The realization actually had me concerned. It left me questioning my ability to transition into a completely different career path. But I knew I needed to make a change, sooner rather than later. I decided to take a chance; with my fingers crossed I applied for an entry-level position in the Flagship Human Resources department. Luckily, the hiring manager recognized that I was well suited for the job, even though I didn’t have any formal training or experience in that area.
After a few years, I moved into a Senior Human Resource Specialist role, where I oversaw the onboarding process for all new associates. I loved being the first impression our new hires had of Flagship, and it was a responsibility I took very seriously.
I’m constantly seeking ways to ‘be’ better in my role here, to add value where I can. I eventually received my SHRM-CP certification, which enabled me to tap into a whole new set of knowledge and resources.
Today, I am a Compensation and Benefits Analyst at Flagship. I’ve never once regretted taking the leap all those years ago; changing my career path was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I’m grateful to Flagship for understanding not everyone knows what they want to do — or who they want to be — right out of college. They value people who follow their strengths. They value people with a passion for learning new things. And because of their ability to see the ‘me’ beyond the resume, I’m allowed to pursue a career that I absolutely love!
